Christ with a Burning Heart in an Oval, ca. 1800. John Alais (ca. 1778–fl. ca. 1820), graphic artist. Stippled copperplate engraving, height 15.6 cm, width 10.3 cm. Composition enclosed in an oval surrounded by a linear dotted frame. Christ shown in a bust, head slightly bowed, displaying a heart crowned with thorns and a cross burning on his chest. Belongs to a series of graphic compositions depicting objects of worship and devotional representations associated with the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Possibly made for Jesuit publications or congregations such as the Society of the Sacred Heart; plates may have originated from monastery printing houses. Some impressions bear inscriptions indicating Peccanarist / 'Society of the Faith of Jesus.' Engraver's signature and publisher's name appear on some prints.
