S. Jons Ap. (Saint John the Evangelist), Czerski, Stanislaw (1777–1833), graphic artist, John the Evangelist (Saint; ?–ca. 100) — iconography, devotional depiction: the image shows Saint John the Evangelist as a bust in a cloud holding a scroll, with attributes an eagle and a chalice with a snake. Parts of the face and the cloud are stippled. The engraving was made by Father Stanislaw Czerski in Salanty in Samogitia. As a parish priest, with the help of a young assistant he adopted, he devoted himself to engraving images of saints with Samogitian inscriptions: because he only engraved these images for his parishioners, who, as inhabitants of pure Samogitia, do not know any other language. The plates, press, and tools were transferred to Vilnius after his death. Date: 1822–1832. Medium/technique: graphic; graphic matrix/plate. Dimensions: height 10 cm, width 6.4 cm.
