If you love me, keep my Commandments. (Two saints adoring the Holy Spirit). John Alais (ca. 1778–fl. ca. 1820), graphic artist. Eye of Providence. Dove of the Holy Spirit, saints, nuns, texts of prayers, angels, Arma Christi (attributes), prayer, women, men, kneeling men, praying women. Composition enclosed in a linear frame. In the center, on a drapery suspended from an architectural element, are quotations from Ecclesiastes and the Gospel of Matthew. Above, two angels adoring the Dove of the Holy Spirit; above the frame, the Eye of Providence. At the foot of the drapery are two kneeling saints: at left with the Arma Christi, at right in a nun's habit (possibly Carmelite), behind her the head of a kneeling bearded man. Possibly connected with Jesuit or related devotional print production; stylistically linked to stippled copperplate (etched) technique. Inscription/engraver’s signature and publisher’s name present. Date: ca. 1803–1820. Medium: graphic plate (stippled copperplate). Dimensions: height 14 cm, width 8.2 cm.
