Depicts Julia Pastrana (1834–1860), born in Mexico, who suffered from hypertrichosis with long beard, extensive body hair, and two rows of teeth. Purchased by impresario Teodor Lent, she was exhibited in Europe and America; circus advertising labeled her 'a gorilla woman.' Lent married her when she threatened to leave; she died in childbirth, the infant also died, and their bodies were embalmed and sold to the St. Petersburg Kunstkammer.
