Two Koryak nomads ('reindeer herders') in fur coats and long fur boots. Drawing for a lithograph created in 1844 by Leopold Niemirowski (1810–1883). Lithograph produced ca. 1856 by F. Draeger (Moscow lithographic workshop). Nemirovsky was sentenced to 20 years' hard labor, spent time in Tobolsk and Irkutsk, and in May 1844 was hired as a draftsman for a scientific expedition organized by the Irkutsk Branch of the Geographical Society. The expedition route: Irkutsk ? Okhotsk by sea ? Kamchatka ? overland through Koryak, Chukchi, and Yakut areas; returned to Irkutsk July 17, 1845. Niemirowski produced many documentary drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings of landscapes, folklore, and daily life. The drawings were published in the album 'Putieshestvije po Wostocznoj Sibiri,' Saint Petersburg, 1856, credited to expedition leader Ivan Demjanovich Bulychev; the artist's name is not mentioned.
