Leather appliqués (belts and a colorful checkerboard motif) suggest these are Kamchadal costumes; material and design indicate a seashore people engaged in fishing and hunting. Nemirovsky was sentenced to 20 years of hard labor and spent time in Tobolsk and Irkutsk; in May 1844 he was hired as draftsman for a scientific expedition from Irkutsk via Okhotsk by sea to Kamchatka and overland through Koryak, Chukchi, and Yakut areas, producing numerous documentary drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings.
