Pocket sundial with compass by Michael Butterfield (1635–1724), octagonal, engraved on both sides, with names of French and European cities inscribed on the underside with their longitudes. Signed 'Butterfield / Paris.' On the underside: a decharge mark for very small items of the lessee Étienne Ridereau (lily flower in a rhombus) struck 29 VII 1684 to 1 X 1687. Date: 1684–1687. Place: Paris, France. Function: measuring instrument (height 11.2 cm; width 8.2 cm).
