Red-figure hydria by the Amycus Painter, c. 420–400 BC (dating before a 2019 revision: c. 420–410 BC). Lucanian red-figure hydria on a high profiled foot; weight 2.056 kg. The belly widens evenly to broad, slightly sloping shoulders and a neck terminating in a wide profiled rim. The neck is decorated with an ovoid at the base and a band of leaves; the ovoid also surrounds the rim edge. The figurative scene on the belly and shoulders, above a meander band, shows a naked youth seated on a rock. A man in profile turns back, leaning against a rock with his right hand and resting his left hand on his left knee; the youth is slender with clearly defined muscles. The ephebe is flanked by two female figures in lavish robes: the woman to his left holds a mirror whose reflection the youth gazes into, while the woman on the opposite side holds a long branch topped with leaves in her right hand. Both females hold their left hands near the hip and lean slightly toward the ephebe.
