Red-figure hydria by the Amycus Painter, c. 420–400 BC (previously dated 420–410 BC). Greek pottery (Lucania). Red-figure hydria on a high, profiled foot; belly widens evenly toward broad, slightly sloping shoulders rising to a neck with a wide, profiled rim. Neck decorated with an ovoid at the base and a band of leaves; ovoid also borders the rim. Figurative scene on the belly and shoulders above a meander band: a naked youth seated on a rock at center; a man in profile turning back, leaning on a rock with his right hand and left hand on his left knee; the youth is slender with defined musculature. The ephebe is flanked by two draped female figures: left woman holds a mirror reflecting the youth; right woman holds a long leafy branch in her right hand. Both women hold their left hands near the hip and lean slightly toward the ephebe. Vessel type: hydria. Weight: 2.056 kg.
