On the right a bearded man reclines under a makeshift shelter of cloth supported by poles, surrounded by various overturned and broken objects and a few animal-like forms; the foreground contains scattered human bodies and a crouching figure attending one prone body. The central water area includes a large whale- or sea-monster-shaped hull with people aboard and smaller boats with oars and flags, while the distant background shows a rocky coastline, low hills, and streaked cloudy sky. The overall tones are monochrome black, white, and shades of gray.
