Flower arrangement; Frederik de Wit ca. 1630–1706, young creator; Jeremias Falck ca. 1609–1677 engraver; flowers; albums; pattern books; decoration patterns; thistles; botany; irises; Polish; Florum Icones, 1662 — illustration; French graphics; after 1662; Hamburg; Amsterdam; album; height 21.3 cm; width 15.9 cm, An engraved botanical illustration on a cream-colored, slightly aged paper showing a group of plants arranged across the page; on the left a spiky thistle with tall ribbed stems and a pair of round, bristly flower heads, surrounded by jagged, lobed leaves with sharp points rendered in fine dark brown lines; below it a cluster of open wildrose-type flowers with rounded petals and textured centers plus a group of oval, veined leaves and unopened buds, all drawn in the same dark brown ink; to the right a tall, elegant iris with broad, curving petals and long, smooth leaves, depicted with parallel hatch shading; above and between the plants a slender-stemmed branch bearing clusters of small, rounded berry-like fruits and lobed leaves; the entire composition is framed by a thin double-line border and shows subtle paper stains and discoloration in shades of light brown and tan.
