Portrait of Maria née Londone Landau. The portrait depicts the artist's sister-in-law, Maria née Londone Landau. Maria's sister, Róza London, was the wife of Leopold Horowitz. The sisters were daughters of Szymon Londnon and Zofia née Lesser, sister of the painter, critic, and collector Aleksander Lesser. Maria married the Warsaw notary Szymon Landau office active 1880–1933; he authored an early draft of the Notarial Act 1917 and helped found the Peer Delegation that became the nucleus of notarial self-government in reborn Poland. Maria and Szymon had six children; their daughter Jadwiga 1852–1936 married industrialist and collector Leopold Wellisz. The pendant to this portrait is an image of Szymon Landau, created by Horowitz on cardboard in crayon, charcoal, and pastel in 1905. Leopold Horowitz 1838–1917 was primarily a portrait painter who usually worked in oil; here he used pastel, perhaps to create an intimate yet elegant family portrait. 1896; pastel; height 94 cm, width 73.5 cm framed., A framed portrait of a woman shown in profile wearing a hat with decorative embellishments, rendered in soft sketching and shading on a tan background; the woman has dark hair styled up, a neutral facial expression, and is dressed in a high-collared garment with voluminous sleeves; the sketch includes soft blue and white shading around the figure and darker charcoal strokes defining contours; the frame is wooden with warm brown tones and a narrow inner trim in a lighter color.
