Study of a Peasant Woman, Jan Rembowski 1879–1923, 1919. Pastel on dark gray cardboard, 47.5 x 31.8 cm in the frame. Female portrait of a peasant woman; executed with colored pastels with the ground color consciously integrated into the composition. Rembowski outlined the figure with strong, sharp pastel lines, built the face with a thicker, smoothly rubbed layer of pastel, and added pink and white highlights and reflections. Related compositional studies of peasants appear in Rembowski’s 1917 sketchbook, showing progression from realistic studies to simplified, monumentalized designs; the back of the work’s binding bears a label inscribed Study, pastel with the submission date 1/9/1919. Inv. no. 185070. EM, pastel, drawing; height 48.5 cm, width 34.5 cm., A framed portrait of a person with dark hair covered by a dark headscarf against a blue background, showing a face with warm brown and reddish skin tones, blue eyes, and neutral lips, wearing a dark, vertically striped garment in shades of charcoal and gray, with hints of green and blue in the background landscape and subtle highlights of ochre and violet in the hair and facial shading.
