Yellow Lady, Kaufmann, Leon Kamir; 1872–1933, painter. 1909. Pastel on black paper. Height 137.5 cm, width 43.5 cm. Female portrait: standing woman in a long yellow shimmering satin dress. Artist drew a few lines with the sharp end of a sanguine red pastel crayon, building the figure’s volume with energetic strokes of lemon and warmer yellow pastel, placing highlights on the folds of the dress. Face, nose, and clenched hand outlined with smeared pinkish pastel; highlights and the white of the dress’s collar emphasized with touches of white. Kaufmann employed a drawing method using pastels that, by exploiting the color of the ground, achieves a painterly effect. The composition and treatment of fabric show continuity with his later oil painting Spring – Lady in the Garden by the Fountain 1926, which similarly emphasizes lights and reflections on silk with decisive brushstrokes., A tall, narrow portrait of a standing figure rendered mainly in shades of yellow and green against a dark background, showing the long flowing drapery of a dress with ruffled details at the shoulders and hem, a visible arm with a hand resting near the hip, a suggestion of a head and face with subtle highlights, and a cane or staff alongside the figure; the image also includes a thin border and small worn areas around the edges with colors including yellow, green, brown, and dark gray.
