Set of three trays on legs kakeban. Japanese, Edo period early 19th century. Low tables, identically decorated but of different dimensions allowing them to be stacked pyramidally, one on top of the other. Each table has an almost square top framed with high slats, supported by four curved legs connected at the bottom by four slats forming a square base. The top and the inner side of the slats framing it are coated with vermilion-coloured lacquer; the remaining surfaces are covered with shiny black roiro-nuri lacquer and decorated with a golden ornament of pine branches and plum blossoms made using the sprinkling technique hiramaki-e; decoration slightly raised above the background surface. Subject motifs: plum trees, flowers, trees, pine trees, twigs, winter. Piece of furniture., A three-tiered stand with curved rectangular frames appears centered against a pale gray background, the stand showing a glossy black finish with decorative gold floral and leaf patterns along the edges and supports, and the top surfaces of each tier displaying a deep red color; the structure creates open oval-shaped side openings between tiers and the overall shape has smooth rounded corners and elegant curved legs.
