Katagami dyeing stencil; geometric-floral pattern stylized after the traditional Chinese brocade pattern syokko; maker, Japanese; Meiji period 1868–1912; ise-katagami stencil with brocade ornaments; 19th–20th century; stencil; height 40.3 cm, width 23.6 cm., A rectangular sheet with a dark border surrounds an inner panel of intricate cutwork forming a repeating geometric and floral pattern; the border is a deep brownish-black and shows subtle texture and creases, while the inner cutwork is dark against a bright white background, creating high contrast. The cutwork panel contains a grid-like arrangement of oval and octagonal shapes alternating with stylized floral motifs and small decorative curlicues, all rendered in the same dark color as the border, with areas of white visible through the openwork. The overall composition is flat and centered within a clean white surrounding, and the visible colors are dark brownish-black and white.
