Katagami dyeing stencil with a motif of facing cranes inscribed in a rhombus mukai tsurubishi, ise-katagami stencil in chuban format, geometric patterns, birds cranes. Japan, 2nd half of the 19th century late Edo–Meiji. Stencil paper, height 40.8 cm, width 25.3 cm., A repeating decorative pattern of white cutout shapes arranged in a grid across a dark brown textured background, forming a series of elongated diamond-like motifs with curved, organic inner shapes and scalloped, dot-and-line embellishments; the white areas create eye-like central forms and flowing, wave-like details, while the brown background fills the spaces between and around the motifs; a small irregular blue mark appears near the upper left, and there are a few small lighter spots and scuffs on the dark surface.
