Temple lantern, creator unknown, Japanese, Edo 1603–1868, Man'en 1860–1861. Bronze lantern depicting dragons, swastika, monkey zodiac; temple lantern on a high, multi-segmented shaft with large round base. Hexagonal roof decorated with dragons, pendants and bells on the edges; topped with a flaming pearl. Assembled from elements cast in bronze, with relief and applied solid decorations. Dated 1860 Man'en 1, 9th month, Year of the Monkey. Japan. Lamp. Weight 54.0 kg; height 184.0 cm., A group of metal objects arranged on a neutral background includes a tall, dark metallic pedestal with a fluted, layered shaft and an ornate base decorated with relief motifs, a rounded openwork lantern-like vessel with perforated patterns and a small latch, a low circular metal ring with a patinated interior, and a squat vessel with a bulbous body, a decorative flame-shaped finial on top, curved scroll handles, and a greenish patina; the visible colors are dark gray, black, greenish patina, and hints of bronze.
