Vase, 19th century, India. Vase with a bulging, flattened belly tapering toward the bottom; wide spout and round foot. Polychrome in red, pink, yellow, white and black. Height 50.0 cm, diameter 13.0 cm, weight 5.75 kg. Decorative program: Hindu subjects Vaishnavism, Shaivism depicting gods Vishnu, Shiva, teachers, ascetics; motifs include fish, plant and geometric ornaments; jugs/containers., An ornate rounded vessel with a flared neck and pedestal base sits against a plain gray background; its surface displays a dominant red color with extensive gold and dark brown metallic detailing, including patterned bands and decorative floral motifs, and several medallion-like scenes rendered in darker tones surrounded by gold highlights; the neck, shoulder, and base show etched or engraved feather-like patterns in brown and gold, while the midsection has red panels filled with stylized leaves and floral elements in gold and darker red, and the foot and lip carry concentric bands of brown and gold.
