Feng shui compass luopan, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911, 19th century. San Yuan Luo Pan also known as yi pan or jiang pan containing the ring for the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and a 24-direction ring. Used by practitioners of the Three Cycles System of Feng Shui including Flying Stars Time Space. Material: measuring instrument; diameter 17.0 cm. Subjects: navigational objects, astrology, calendars, Chinese Zodiac., A circular lacquered object with a central glass-covered circular inset, displaying a concentric pattern of small rectangular segments radiating outward; the surface is primarily black with intricate markings in gold and some accents in red, and the central inset shows a pale, reflective area beneath glass. The object has a slightly raised rim with subtle wear revealing a dark reddish edge, and it rests against a uniform gray background.
