Feng shui compass luopan, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911, 19th century. San yuan luo pan also known as yi pan or jiang pan with the ring for the 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching and a 24-direction ring; used by practitioners of the Three Cycles System of Feng Shui including Flying Stars Time Space. Function: navigational/astrological measuring instrument. Diameter 17.0 cm., A circular, flat object with concentric rings of fine markings and grid-like divisions across its dark surface, featuring a central round glass-covered element with a small needle; the surface shows a pattern of primarily gold lines and symbols with occasional red accents on a black background, and the rim has a worn dark edge with hints of brown; the overall background is a uniform gray.
