Bowl with a lid, ; Qing dynasty, Tongzhi period 1862–1874, China; colored porcelain; vessel with decoration of loosely placed bats and swastikas in the background and genre scenes; height 8.6 cm, diameter 10.3 cm., A small bowl with a lid sits centered against a neutral gray background, the bowl and lid predominantly a warm reddish-orange with glossy finish and a reflective surface beneath showing a faint mirror image. The rim, interior of some circular medallions, and portions of decorative panels are white, and the decoration includes painted motifs in green, pale blue, pink, and gold. The bowl has a short foot and a rounded body that tapers slightly inward toward the rim, and the lid has a small raised central knob area. Several circular white medallions with contained linear designs and a few oval panels with floral or figurative scenes encircle the exterior, and fine gold accents and small cloudlike gold motifs are scattered across the reddish-orange ground. The overall composition shows smooth ceramic contours, balanced ornamentation, and a soft shadow where the object meets the reflective surface.
