Incense burner koro with cover, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912. Bronze vessel in the shape of a cuboid box on four slightly arched legs standing on a tall rectangular base. Panels with relief decoration of karashishi and peonies. Cover with four holes topped with a qilin. 2nd half of the 19th century. Height 22.0 cm; width 9.5 cm; depth 7.5 cm., A small ornate object stands against a plain gray background, primarily brown with darker bronze or blackened details; it has a carved animal figure on top in dark bronze tones, decorative curved metalwork in brown and dark bronze beneath it, and a relief panel on the front featuring a floral or botanical motif in dark bronze on a brown base. The piece rests on four curved legs that are brown with darker accents and sit on a rectangular brown platform that has darker carved ornamentation along its front edge. The surface shows polished brown wood tones and darker bronze highlights, and the object casts a faint reflection on the smooth surface below.
