Incense burner kôro with cover, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912. Bronze incense burner in the shape of a cuboid box on four slightly arched legs standing on a tall rectangular base. Panels with relief decoration of karashishi and peonies. Cover with four holes topped with a qilin. 2nd half of the 19th century. Vessel. Height 22.0 cm; width 9.5 cm; depth 7.5 cm., A small ornate container made of dark brown material with patinated darker accents stands on a square base; the base has carved floral motifs and curved cutaway corners, and it supports four slender legs that rise to a slightly larger square body with raised decorative panels showing low-relief sculpted scenes. The lid is topped by a sculpted mythical animal figure in a similar dark brown tone, and there are carved looped handles and ornamental corner elements with darker highlights. The overall colors visible are various shades of brown with darker brown or nearly black details, and the object sits on a reflective neutral surface against a smooth light gray background.
