Box with a lid., Japanese; Meiji period 2nd half of the 19th century. Wooden core covered with lacquer; carved red lacquer exterior, black lacquer interior. Decoration: dragons, dragon with a pearl. Function: container. Height 3.5 cm; diameter 10.9 cm; weight 149 g., A circular carved object with a raised dragon motif occupying most of the surface, showing textured scales, a flowing mane, claws, and sinuous limbs; the carving has deep relief and glossy highlights. The object is predominantly red with darker red to near-black shadows in the recesses of the carving. The background behind the circular piece is a flat muted gray. The edges of the circular object are rounded and show the same red color with darker shading along the inner rim.
