Basket. Octagonal, shallow wooden basket with an ivory rim and handle. Inside the basket is a relief scene. In the central field is a palace surrounded by rich vegetation, at the foot of which a wild, spotted animal leopard? tiger? dog? strolls. A trail of stars is carved around this scene. The basket's side panels alternate with images of the same animal and flowers. The spaces between the panels are filled with colorful mosaic tiles. The basket's handle and rim are made of ivory. The basket served both utilitarian and decorative purposes. 19th century, India. Container; height 14.0 cm, width 24.0 cm. Indian art; South Asian; floral ornament; animals; flowers; plant ornaments; mosaics; leopards., An octagonal carved wooden tray with a central raised panel depicting a building surrounded by floral and foliate motifs, framed by a decorative band with small inlaid pieces and a border of alternating dark and light geometric bands; each side panel contains carved floral scenes and animal figures, all set within a pale ivory outer rim accented with dark circular studs and small metal corner fittings, visible colors include warm brown wood tones, pale ivory, dark brown or black inlays, and small hints of green and bluish tones in the decorative band, set against a neutral gray background.
