Small cabinet kodansu, Meiji period 2nd half of 19th century, Japan. Rectangular cabinet closed with double doors mounted on engraved brass hinges; equipped with seven drawers the eighth at the top is missing. Door face filled with a landscape composition with pavilions by the water, hills, and a flock of cranes. Side exterior walls decorated with a bamboo motif; interior decorated with floral motifs. Decoration executed in maki-e with gold powder on wood coated with black lacquer. Motifs include flowers, landscape elements, geese, mountains, pines, bamboo, spotted pheasants, and architecture. Piece of furniture; height 45.5 cm, width 52.2 cm, depth 31.7 cm., A rectangular black cabinet with its two doors open to reveal a set of drawers decorated with gold floral motifs; the exterior and drawer faces are glossy black with gold trim and gold handles, and the inner panels of each door feature vertical gold plant designs on a black background framed by a gold border; the drawer fronts display repeating gold flowers and leaves arranged in flowing patterns, and there are gold corner fittings and a gold lock plate on one side; the surrounding background is a neutral gray.
