Small cabinet kodansu, Meiji period 2nd half of the 19th century, Japan. Rectangular cabinet closed with double doors mounted on engraved brass hinges; equipped with seven drawers the eighth at the very top is missing. Door face filled with a landscape composition of pavilions by the water, hills, and a flock of cranes. Side exterior walls decorated with a bamboo motif; interior decorated with floral motifs. Wood coated with black lacquer; decorative motifs executed in maki-e with gold powder. Motifs include flowers, landscape elements, geese, mountains, pines, bamboo, spotted pheasants, and architecture. Piece of furniture. Height 45.5 cm, width 52.2 cm, depth 31.7 cm., A rectangular black lacquered cabinet with ornamental metal corner protectors and hinges in a gold tone, decorated with gold-colored landscape scenes including stylized trees, small raised buildings on stilts, flying birds, and bamboo stalks, with a gold ring handle on one side; the cabinet shows wear at some edges revealing lighter areas, and the overall palette consists mainly of black and gold with subtle brownish and gray tones.
