Container hokai for shells for the game kai awase, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912 and late Edo 1603–1868 periods, wood covered with black lacquer, decoration with gold maki-e lacquer, gilded copper fittings. Decorated with feathers and aoi hollyhock plant ornament. Function: container for shells used in the parlor game kai awase. 19th century Edo–Meiji. Place of origin: Edo, Japan. Height 37.5 cm; diameter 40.0 cm., A dark brown ribbed wooden container with a round top supported by four angled legs, decorated with gold metal fittings on the leg ends and on the top corners; the front shows a pair of circular gold emblems, one with a stylized tree-like motif and the other with an abstract symmetrical motif, both rendered in gold tones with some reddish-gold shading; the legs and central vertical support feature small gold diamond-shaped accents and engraved gold plates with floral patterns; the background is a smooth gray.
