Container hokai for shells for the game kai awase, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912 and Edo 1603–1868 periods. Wood covered with black lacquer, decorated with gold maki-e lacquer, gilded copper fittings. Decoration: feathers, aoi hollyhock plant ornament. Function: container for shells used in the game kai awase. 19th century Edo–Meiji period, Japan; Edo. Height 37.5 cm; diameter 40.0 cm., A dark brown, ribbed cylindrical container elevated on a tripod of three dark brown legs with ornate gold-colored metal fittings at the feet and connecting points; the main body shows two large circular gold-colored emblems on its front face, one containing stylized leaf-like shapes and the other containing a different symmetrical motif, both set against the dark brown ribbed surface; the legs have small gold-colored decorative accents along their length and gold-colored corner protectors with engraved patterns; the top rim is dark brown and the background behind the object is a neutral gray.
