Engraved decoration inlaid with a thin layer of silver: cranes among reeds by the water; a symmetrically repeated floral motif on the neck; kikko pattern; grasses; birds. Meiji period 1868–1912, 19th/20th century, Japan. Vessel. Height 30.1 cm; diameter 15.6 cm., A metal vase with a flared neck and rounded body standing on a slightly flared base, rendered in bronze tones with areas of darker and lighter brown and subtle metallic gray highlights; the neck features a repeating decorative band with ornate leaf-like motifs in a lighter metallic tone, the body is engraved with a natural scene showing a group of birds wading among detailed grasses and flowering plants in a paler metallic shade, and the base bears a geometric honeycomb-like pattern in similar bronze and gray hues.
