The ornament is a complex three-dimensional scene of a lotus pond: four cranes standing in natural poses among densely growing lotuses. The design was based on a thirteenth-century Yuan-era ornament. Though Mongolian nobility once wore wide-brimmed hats with jade bosses on top, by the Ming this headgear was abandoned; jade ornaments remained in use and were also applied to vessels as decorative elements for their material and craft value.
