Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie, school craftsman author. Japanese art, Japanese culture, Edo 1603–1868. Weapons; melee weapons; swords; katana; sword crossguards. Landscape motifs: rocks, mokkô, bamboos, trees, fishermen, mountains, moons. Tsuba in the shape of a quatrefoil mokkô gata with a slightly raised edge uchi kaeshi, ryôhitsu ana, textured surface ishime ji. Decorated in low relief hirabori with a landscape motif showing a fisherman sitting on the water's edge under a cliff and the moon emerging from behind distant hills visible at the top of the crossguard. Signed. 18th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Japan; Fushimi, Yamashiro. Tsuba. Height 8.5 cm; width 7.8 cm; depth 0.4 cm., A roughly oval metallic object with a textured gray surface and a few small shiny gold accents, featuring three irregular cutouts near its center; a few raised carved details form a scene with a reclining figure on the lower right rendered in gray and white tones, a few thin gold lines and dots near the lower center and right, and a slender branch or tree shape at the upper right with touches of gold.
