Crossguard tsuba, Akasaka role classification of creator, school author. Japanese, Edo period 18th/19th century. Tsuba round maru gata with a rounded edge maru mimi; seppa dai oval; sekigane copper. Decorated with an openwork ji sukashi design, partly positive and partly negative, depicting two crickets among chrysanthemums, flowers, and grasses. Not signed. Diameter 7.2 cm; thickness 0.5 cm., A round metal object with an openwork floral and insect design set against a gray background; the object is dark brown to black with areas of rust-colored brown and small patches of lighter brown. The design includes a central oval opening surrounded by cut metal stems, leaves, and several stylized flowers, and a few insect shapes incorporated into the pattern. The outer rim is circular and the metal has a textured, aged surface with subtle variations of dark gray and brown.
