Crossguard tsuba, Akasaka role classification of creator, school author. Japanese, Edo period 18th/19th century. Tsuba katana sword crossguard, round maru gata with a rounded edge maru mimi; seppa dai oval; sekigane copper. Decorated with an openwork ji sukashi design, partly positive and partly negative, depicting two crickets among chrysanthemums, flowers, and grasses. Not signed. Diameter 7.2 cm; thickness 0.5 cm., A round, flat metal object with an openwork decorative pattern sits against a plain gray background; the metal appears dark brown to black with areas of rusty brown and lighter brown patina, and the carved design includes floral and geometric motifs around a central oval opening, with the rim of the piece showing the same dark brown tone.
