Crossguard tsuba, Tôryûsai school; 19th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan. Tsuba in the shape of a rectangle with rounded sides and corners nadegaku gata, slightly raised with a rounded profiled edge. Surface decorated in low and high relief: obverse shows a large butterfly in flight seen sideways, with a nakago-ana through its wings, an oval seppa-dai, and side hitsu-ana; details engraved and highlighted with gilded nunome inlay. Reverse depicts a chrysanthemum sprig with a flower visible from the back, rendered in brass high-relief inlay takazôgan and gold nunome inlay. Unsigned. Materials: metal with brass and gold inlay. Type: tsuba sword crossguard. Dimensions: height 8 cm, width 7.5 cm, depth 0.6 cm., A dark brown rounded square metal object with a central vertical oval opening flanked by two rounded openings, decorated with a raised flower motif at the upper left and a group of leafy plant motifs along the lower edge, with several gilded highlights on parts of the flower and leaves; the surface shows textured dark brown patina and subtle variations of brown and black, set against a neutral gray background.
