Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie, school craftsman author; Japanese; Edo period 1603–1868, 18th century; Japan — Yamashiro province, Fushimi city. Tsuba in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners nadegaku gata, slightly convex edge uchi kaeshi, with ryôhitsu ana of identical three-petal shape. Decorated in relief: obverse with ten figures of Buddhist and Taoist saints; reverse with a landscape featuring a pavilion and a bridge over an embankment. Details inlaid with gold, shakudô, and brass. Materials/subject: weapons — melee weapons, swords, katana, sword crossguards, pagodas, pine trees, bridges, trees, rocks. Dimensions: height 8.4 cm; width 7.6 cm; depth 0.4 cm., A dark metallic, rounded-square object with a central vertical opening flanked by two irregular side openings, decorated with a ring of small raised human and animal figures in low relief; the surface shows accents of gold on parts of the figures and some worn areas with a coppery brown tone, while the background metal is a matte dark gray to almost black; the figures include robed people and a few animal or mythical forms arranged around the edge, with details like flowing garments, staffs or weapons, and small decorative dots highlighted in gold.
