High relief decoration depicts Taoist immortal sages, animals — a tiger, a crane symbols of courage and longevity, plants — a pine tree, a bamboo, a tendril — and clouds. 18th century Edo period 1603–1868, Japan, Ômi Eshu province, tsuba, diameter 8 cm, thickness 0.4 cm, A round metal object with a dark brown surface and gilded highlights depicting a scene with a few human figures in traditional dress, a person riding a small animal, and a person standing with a staff, set among stylized clouds, foliage, and flowing water motifs; the metal shows areas of gold and silver inlay and a thin gold rim, with three central cutouts and an overall worn, textured patina in shades of brown, gold, and subtle silver.
