Mirror, gift, Chinese, Qing dynasty 1644–1911. Bronze mirror with polished obverse; reverse contains characters with good wishes and Chinese symbols for happiness associated with Taoism. 19th century. Mirror, diameter 34.5 cm, height 1.5 cm, weight 4.015 kg., A round metal mirror with a raised rim and a central boss, shown from above, with an attached braided loop of light beige cord; the mirror surface is an aged bronze color with darker brown areas and greenish patina; the surface is decorated with a ring of small raised figurative and abstract motifs including a few humanlike figures, a few animallike shapes, and a few knotlike designs arranged around the center, plus a few square framed panels containing raised shapes; the rim and outer edge have a slightly brighter golden-bronze tone while the decorative reliefs show varied brown and shadowed tones.
