Vessel, gift, Meiji period 1868–1912, Japan; champlevé enamel; plant motifs, butterflies, flowers, fans; sasarindo coat of arms; 19th century; height 28 cm, diameter 28.6 cm., An ornate metal vessel with a rounded bulbous rim narrowing into a flared base sits against a plain light gray background; the vessel displays a dominant turquoise enamel with decorative bands of green, blue, white, pink, yellow, red, and gold; floral and star-like motifs in blue, white, yellow, and pink appear within scrolling green patterns on the upper bulge, while small flower motifs and fan-shaped designs in blue, gold, red, and brown decorate the lower neck; the rim, narrow central band, and scalloped foot show worn gold tones with areas of darker patina, and the vessel casts a soft reflection on the surface beneath it.
