Box with a lid; cloisonné enamel on metal with a slightly convex bas-relief grayish jade plaque on top of the cover. Oval, spheroidal box based on a ring foot, divided halfway into container and lid. Plaque depicts a fenghuang phoenix or peacock with a sun among clouds; the sun is surrounded by a silk ribbon. Motifs and styling reference emblems appearing on mandarin squares: the peacock indicating third rank of a civilian official and the sun referring to imperial authority. The plaque is a finely worked example in jade. Rounded sides of both container and lid are decorated with a multicolored lotus tendril stripe on a turquoise background. Interior filled with a uniform layer of turquoise enamel. Metal rings reinforcing the edges of the container, lid, and plaque attachment are gilded. 18th century, China. Height 8.2 cm; width 11.3 cm; diameter 12.2 cm., A shallow round object with a domed carved top in off-white resting on a circular base decorated with a bright blue band, ornate green scrollwork, and floral motifs in colors including yellow, red, purple, white, and blue, all edged by narrow metallic gold rims; the background is a smooth gradient of gray.
