Box with a lid, cloisonné enamel, 18th century, China. Oval, spheroidal box on a ring foot, divided halfway into container and lid. Slightly convex bas-relief grayish jade plaque added to top of cover depicting a fenghuang phoenix or peacock with a sun among clouds; the sun is surrounded by a silk ribbon. Motifs and styling reference emblems on mandarin squares—peacock denoting third civilian rank and the sun referring to imperial authority. Rounded sides of container and lid decorated with a multicolored lotus tendril stripe on a turquoise ground. Interior filled with a uniform layer of turquoise enamel. Metal rings reinforcing edges of container, lid, and plaque attachment are gilded. Height 8.2 cm; width 11.3 cm; diameter 12.2 cm., A round decorative box with a domed lid carved from a pale, creamy material and an ornate body covered in a bright turquoise-blue enamel patterned with swirling vine motifs and stylized floral designs in colors including gold, green, red, white, and purple, with bands and base accents in a warm metallic gold tone.
