Slightly convex bas-relief grayish jade plaque on the lid depicting a fenghuang phoenix or peacock with a sun among clouds; sun in upper left surrounded by a silk ribbon. Motifs and styling reference emblems from mandarin squares: peacock denoting third civil rank and sun referring to imperial authority. The jade plaque is a fine example of hard-stone workmanship. Rounded sides of container and lid decorated with multi-colored lotus tendril stripes on a turquoise ground. Interior filled with a uniform layer of turquoise enamel. Metal rings reinforcing the edges of the container, lid, and plaque attachment are gilded. 18th century, China. Height 8.2 cm; width 11.3 cm; diameter 12.2 cm., A rounded decorative container with a domed carved lid sits against a plain pale gray background; the lid appears off-white or cream with carved swirling floral motifs and a thin gold-colored rim, while the body of the container is primarily turquoise blue with intricate scrolling vine patterns in green and accents of purple, white, red, and yellow, outlined in a metallic gold tone; the container has a gold-colored band around its midsection and a matching gold-colored base that shows some wear and darker brownish areas.
