Vase, Toshitsugu maker, Meiji period 19th/20th century, Japan. Ovoid vase on a low ring foot with a very short neck and a strongly flaring, plate-like spout. Decorated in relief, applied, inlaid and engraved naturalistically and asymmetrically with a wisteria vine bearing three clusters of flowers hanging from the neck; a kingfisher perches on a branch near the lowest flower, gazing into engraved water containing engraved fish. Decoration uses the ro-iro zogan technique inlaid color painting, inlaying various metals and alloys and colored enamels white, several lilacs, subtle green accents. Leaves and bird are gilded and patinated with shakudo. Lower belly bears an engraved inscription: Sumisuiin Toshitsugu sei.
