Vase, Toshitsugu craftsman. Meiji period 19th/20th century, Japan. Ovoid vase on a low ring foot with a very short neck and a strongly flaring, plate-like spout. Decorated in relief, applied, inlaid and engraved naturalistic motifs arranged asymmetrically: a wisteria vine with three clusters of flowers hanging down from the top near the neck; a kingfisher perches on a branch near the lowest flower, gazing into engraved water containing engraved fish. Decoration executed in the ro-iro zogan technique inlaid color painting, inlaying various metals and alloys and colored enamels white, several shades of lilac, subtle green accents. Leaves and bird figurine gilded and patinated with shakudo. Lower belly bears engraved inscription: Sumisuiin Toshitsugu sei. Vessel; height 16.2 cm, diameter 7.1 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a rounded shoulder and small flared neck, rendered in dark brown and black tones, decorated with a relief of hanging floral clusters in shades of purple and lilac and a few touches of pale cream, accompanied by sculpted leaves in metallic gold and dark green. The background of the vase is a smooth, deep brown-black with subtle variations in sheen, and the base has a reflective metallic ring in silver. The overall scene shows a group of cascading flower clusters draping down the front, layered leaves around the neck, and the vase sits on a pale gray reflective surface with a neutral gray background.
