Vase by Namikawa Yasuyuki 1845–1927, enameller. Meiji period ca. 1890–1905, Kyoto, Japan. Small, slender cloisonné vase, height 18.0 cm, diameter 7.8 cm. Body tapers to a ring-shaped silver foot; short neck slightly parted at the spout enclosed by a silver ring. Ornamental shippo cloisonné border with rosettes in rhomboid fields at the foot and neck. Petal decoration with stylized phoenix motifs flowing to the shoulders. Belly covered with shiny black enamel with six colorful fan-shaped reserves showing various floral and bird motifs, executed in the yusen technique with silver wires. Silver plaque mounted in the mirror of the bottom engraved: Kyoto Namikawa., A tall, narrow vase with a glossy black background features decorative panels in shades of white, green, teal, brown, gold, and purple; the neck and base have geometric and floral border patterns in yellow, green, brown, and blue, while a band near the top shows stylized ornate motifs in green, blue, brown, and gold; one fan-shaped panel displays green foliage and a yellow and black bird against a white background, another panel shows purple flowers and green leaves with small birds on a muted green background, and additional panels include teal and brown decorative elements, all set against the smooth black surface.
