Tray, Namikawa Sôsuke 1847–1910, ca. 1890–1900 Meiji period, Japan, Nagoya. Rectangular tray with rounded corners, height 1.3 cm, width 23.1 cm, depth 17.2 cm. Cloisonné enamel, musen wireless and yusen cloisonné techniques; shakudo alloy rim. Obverse: asymmetrical painterly composition in musen showing a white heron standing on one leg beside a clump of white and blue irises against a neutral background gradating from bluish at the bottom to cream with a hint of pink. Sparse wires shosen define the bird’s beak and legs. Reverse: dense cherry blossom ornament in two shades of brown on a matte dark brown enamel ground, flowers executed with gold wires and a central silver-wired seal bearing the signature Sakigake., A low rectangular shallow tray viewed from the side with a dark rim and a patterned side showing a repeating floral motif in brown and tan; the inside surface visible near the rim shows pale cream and soft green tones, and the background and surface beneath the tray are light gray.
