Tray, Namikawa Sôsuke 1847–1910 maker, Japanese, Meiji period ca. 1890–1900. Rectangular tray with rounded corners decorated on the obverse with an asymmetrical composition showing a white heron standing on one leg, the other hidden in feathers, next to a clump of white and blue irises. Background neutral, bluish at the bottom to cream at the top with a hint of pink suggesting the fading glow of the aurora. Painterly style achieved using the musen wireless cloisonné technique; sparse wires shosen retained to define the bird’s beak and legs. Reverse covered with a dense cherry blossom ornament in two shades of brown against a uniform matte dark brown enamel ground; the flowers executed using cloisonné yusen with gold wires, and a silver-wired seal in the center woven with the signature Sakigake. Deep glossy black metal tray edge of shakudo alloy. Vessel; height 1.3 cm, width 23.1 cm, depth 17.2 cm. Nagoya, Japan., A shallow rectangular dish viewed from the side, showing a dark rim and a patterned band around the lower edge with a repeated floral motif in gold on a brown background; the interior appears light with a glossy, reflective surface and subtle greenish reflections; overall colors visible include dark blue or black at the rim, brown, gold, light gray or off-white inside, and hints of green.
