Tray by Namikawa Sôsuke 1847–1910. Rectangular tray with rounded corners decorated on the obverse with an asymmetrical composition showing a white heron standing on one leg, the other hidden in feathers, next to a clump of white and blue irises. The background is neutral, ranging from bluish at the bottom to cream at the top, with a slight hint of pink, suggesting the delicate, fading glow of the aurora. The entire composition is in a painterly style, achieved using the musen technique enamel without wires. Sparse wires shosen technique define a few details — the bird's beak and legs. The reverse is covered with a dense cherry blossom ornament in two shades of brown against a uniform matte dark brown enamel; the flowers are executed using the cloisonné technique yusen with gold wires, and in the center is a silver-wired seal woven with the signature Sakigake.
