Ovoid vase one of a pair, slender, on a low ring-shaped foot and a narrow neck, flaring at the rim. The foot and mouth are framed with sheet metal. Decorated with a motif of a blooming iris bush, captured with naturalistic fidelity and attention to a variety of color tones. Executed using the yusen technique, the motif is placed against a uniform sea-green background. Around the foot and the rim there are narrow, colorful borders, also made using the yusen technique, composed of small triangular forms called cicada wings. ca. 1900 Meiji Period, 1868–1912, Nagoya, Japan. Vessel; height 25 cm, width 9.7 cm, depth 8.8 cm., A teal-colored rounded object with a glossy surface sits centered on a pale gray background, viewed from above showing a circular brass-colored rim and a dark central opening; the teal surface reflects subtle highlights and shows a few darker teal shadows along its curved sides, while the brass rim has a weathered, mottled appearance in shades of gold and brown and the background fades from light gray to slightly darker gray toward the edges.
